Tell us a little bit about yourself. What do you do for fun?
I grew up in a family with 11 other siblings. My mom was a nurse, and my dad was a teacher; so it’s no surprise I teach nursing! I have taught at Mount Mercy University since 1977 and have had a wonderful experience. I still keep up with my first mentor and find her as wise and helpful as ever. Since my job takes most of my time in any given week, I like to find fun in the job. Also, I like to travel, visit friends and family, and spend quiet time at home.
What’s something unique that people don’t know about you?
I marched in a Drum and Bugle Corps from Fort Dodge, IA, throughout high school and was able to travel to many places across the country for competitions. I still have lifelong friends from that experience, and I still love to watch competitions.
What causes are you most passionate about?
As a nurse, I’m passionate about access to care for all. I watch developments in healthcare reform with an eye on how patients and families are going to have access to care. Through WLI, I’m able to support efforts to increase access for many who would not otherwise receive it.
Why did you decide to be involved with United Way and WLI?
My fellow member, Jo Ellen Haddad, invited me to join WLI, and I felt very fortunate. It’s an honor, and I’m pleased to participate.
Do you have any advice for others who want to be more active in the community?
Volunteer, volunteer, volunteer! Through volunteering you learn your own strengths, meet others with similar interests, and always help someone else!
